Problem Statement

Traditional sub-meters and utility mainboards (such as TANESCO LUKU prepaid meters) provide electricity consumers and commercial businesses in Tanzania with aggregate monthly or single credit deduction metrics. These systems offer zero visibility into when, where, or which specific internal circuits and appliances consume power. Without real-time, circuit-level telemetry and automated load control, consumers face three primary operational challenges: 1.Unmonitored Standby ("Vampire") Loads: Household electronics, office equipment, and industrial machinery draw continuous standby power even when turned off, resulting in inflated operational expenses and unmitigated power wastage. 2.Passive Distribution Panels: Traditional electrical breaker boxes act solely as passive safety fuses rather than dynamic management nodes. They lack the ability to automatically shed non-essential loads (such as water heaters, auxiliary cooling, or heavy machinery) during high-tariff pricing windows, grid voltage fluctuations, or microgrid battery shortages. 3.High Financial & Technical Barriers: Existing commercial off-the-shelf energy monitors are expensive, store data on closed proprietary cloud servers, and lack integration with regional prepaid utility structures (such as LUKU token balances) or local mobile payment channels.

Proposed Solution

NishatiSmart integrates high-speed hardware telemetry with a localized edge backend and user-facing analytics dashboard into a unified platform without relying on complex machine learning or black-box AI models. Sensors installed on main incoming feeds and individual branch circuits capture real-time current and voltage signals. An ESP32 microcontroller processes these signals using standard electrical formulas, calculating true power metrics before transmitting formatted JSON payloads via MQTT over local Wi-Fi or cellular networks.

Innovation

The platform relies on explicit, user-defined rules and deterministic algorithms to: i.Identify Appliance Baselines: Monitors multi-channel CT sensors directly on individual circuits to measure standby draws based on fixed mathematical thresholds. ii.Automate Load Control: Operates multi-channel relay switches to automatically disconnect low-priority appliances (such as water heaters or auxiliary pumps) when total current draws exceed configured limit thresholds. iii.Translate Telemetry into Cost Insights: Multiplies live kilowatt-hour consumption by exact local utility rate tiers to calculate real-time monetary expenditures in Tanzanian Shillings (TZS), issuing proactive notifications when power usage approaches prepaid limits.

Expected Impact

i.Predictable & Transparent Logic: Zero black-box errors; every relay switch and cost calculation follows direct, clear mathematical formulas. ii.Immediate Cost Reduction: Up to 15%–25% reduction in electricity bills through vampire load elimination and behavior modifications. iii.Democratized Energy Management: Low Bill-of-Materials (BOM) cost allows locally assembled IoT units to be accessible to low- and middle-income households. iv.Grid Strain Alleviation: Automated threshold-based load shifting reduces peak demand stress on local transformer infrastructure.
