Problem Statement
Many local artisans and cultural businesses in Tanzania remain difficult for tourists to discover and access directly. Tourists often depend on established tour companies or informal recommendations to find authentic local products and cultural experiences. At the same time, small sellers have limited digital channels to reach tourists and lack trusted mechanisms for receiving online payments from unfamiliar customers. This creates a gap between tourists seeking authentic local experiences and the local businesses that provide them.
Proposed Solution
A location-based digital platform, built with Django, Angular, and PostgreSQL, that allows tourists to discover nearby verified artisans and cultural businesses and purchase products or cultural experiences directly from them. To increase trust, the platform provides protected payments by holding the tourist's payment until the agreed transaction is completed and the tourist confirms receipt. If the item does not arrive as agreed, the tourist may raise a dispute, and platform administrators determine whether the payment is refunded or released. Sellers are verified before joining the platform, while reviews and transaction history help build trust for future tourists. The app is designed to work on low-end Android devices and slow network connections, since that reflects how most tourists and local sellers in Tanzania actually access the internet.
Innovation
The innovation is in combining location-based discovery, verified local sellers, direct tourist-to-seller transactions, and protected payment within one platform. Instead of only helping tourists find attractions or requiring them to purchase through established intermediaries, the platform creates a trusted digital marketplace where tourists can discover and purchase directly from local cultural businesses. Core flow: Discover → Verify → Purchase → Protected Payment → Confirm → Review.
Expected Impact
Increased income reaching local artisans directly, reduced dependence on intermediaries, and greater tourist confidence purchasing from unfamiliar local sellers. Measurable impact through indicators such as verified sellers onboarded, completed transactions, transaction value, income generated for sellers, dispute rate, and tourist ratings — including confirming the platform performs well on low-bandwidth connections, a core requirement given the target population
