BlockFarming

Problem Statement

Tanzania’s agricultural subsidy program faces severe bottlenecks: 30% of market fertilizers and seeds are estimated to be counterfeit, subsidized inputs suffer from smuggling and diversion and traditional centralized databases are vulnerable to record tampering and ghost distribution fraud. Furthermore, rural smallholder farmers who pay out-of-pocket for discounted inputs lack an offline, tamper-proof method at the point of sale to verify product authenticity and official subsidized pricing.

Proposed Solution

BlockFarming is an end-to-end, blockchain-backed supply chain verification and decentralized payment platform built for low-connectivity environments. Factory-level batches are cryptographically hashed onto a distributed ledger and packages receive scratch-off tokens. Farmers verify authenticity and official prices using a simple USSD code (*150*00#) on basic feature phones ("kitochi"). Validations automatically trigger smart contract subsidy payouts via mobile money (M-Pesa, Tigo Pesa, Airtel Money, etc.) directly to local agro-dealers while permanently flagging tokens as redeemed.

Innovation

BlockFarming bridges high-level cryptographic security with offline rural accessibility. Instead of relying on internet connectivity or smartphones, it connects Solana/Hyperledger smart contracts to GSM feature phones via USSD gateways. This delivers single-use cryptographic verification and instant, automated mobile money settlement directly to the last-mile smallholder farmer.

Expected Impact

i. 100% elimination of unverified counterfeit codes at the point of purchase. ii. Sub-5-second USSD response times providing real-time authenticity and price validation to rural farmers. iii. Total prevention of duplicate subsidy claims and ghost-distribution fraud using immutable smart contract redemption logic. iv. Instant financial reimbursement for local agro-dealers, removing weeks of administrative payment delays. v. Complete, real-time supply chain transparency across all Tanzanian regions for TFRA regulators.
