MedTrace: Blockchain-Based Medical Supply Donation Tracking

Problem Statement

Problem statement: Medical supply donations pass through many hands (donor, freight, NGOs, clinic) but are tracked with paper forms, WhatsApp, and spreadsheets, so no outside party can verify a shipment reached its destination. This makes it easy for supplies to be lost, delayed, or redirected, since there's no shared, trustworthy record.

Proposed Solution

A working decentralized application with a Solidity smart contract that enforces the donation workflow as a strict state machine (Created → In Transit → Received → Distributed → Completed), paired with a simple Web3.js frontend. Role-based access control (Donor/NGO/Healthcare Facility) governs who can act, on-chain events log every action as a built-in audit trail, and off-chain receipts/photos are stored on IPFS with only their hashes on-chain.

Innovation

A single shared, tamper-resistant ledger that independent parties can both write to and read from, rather than each organization keeping its own siloed paper or spreadsheet record — replacing manual reconciliation with an enforced on-chain state machine that structurally prevents out-of-order or unauthorized status changes.

Expected Impact

Makes the full custody chain of a donation independently verifiable by anyone (auditor, funder, or facility) without needing to trust one organization's word, and is expected to measurably reduce the number of donations that can't be accounted for compared to the current paper-and-spreadsheet process
